DIY Laundry Detergent

I like things to be safe, natural and affordable! Many times these three things don't always coincide, but when it does--- it feels like Christmas! So, today's post is a how to make your own laundry detergent!

But first... here are the top three  reasons why you may want to make your own laundry soap!

1. You know the ingredients- no questioning chemicals!
Having a baby inspired me to start looking up the ingredients in laundry detergents, and even in baby detergents or all free and clear---- they are full of toxins and aren't that free and clear! Home made soap has three ingredients that are all natural, safe and effective!

These are the ingredients listed in Tide detergent:

Ingredients Cleaning Technology
water process aid
alcoholethoxy sulfate surfactant
linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant
propylene glycol process aid
citric acid captures soil
sodium hydroxide pH neutralizer
borax captures soil
ethanolamine process aid
ethanol process aid
alcohol sulfate surfactant
polyethyleneimine ethoxylate polymer
sodium fatty acids surfactant
diquaternium ethoxysulfate polymer
protease enzyme
diethylene glycol process aid
laureth-9 surfactant
alkyldimethylamine oxide surfactant
fragrance fragrance
amylase enzyme
disodium diaminostilbene disulfonate brightener
DTPA captures soil
sodium formate process aid
calcium formate process aid
polyethylene glycol 4000 process aid
mannanase enzyme
Liquitint™ Blue colorant
dimethicone

Most of these I can't even pronounce, let alone, would want them touching my family's skin all day!

Now if you go the "natural route"  or "baby safe" route this is what you'll find:

All Free and Clear:
Acrylic Polymer Dispersant
Ethoxylated Lauryl Alcohol Surfactant
Disodium Distyrylbiphenyl Disulfonate Brightening Agent
Glycerin Solvent

While there are less ingredients, there are still harmful chemicals listed that I don't want on my family's skin all day either!

2. It's sooo much cheaper!

An average bottle of detergent costs .20/load (doesn't sound like much... but adds up!). Homemade laundry detergent costs .02/load!

3. It's ridiculously EASY!

I make enough laundry detergent to last me about 6 months at a time, and it takes me about a half an hour of actual work! So let's get to work!

Steps to Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

Cloth diaper safe, baby safe, home safe, free of toxins!

 Get the necessary ingredients

A. Washing Soda
B.  Borax
C. A bar of castille soap (I love Dr. bronners castille soap)
D. (optional) High Grade Essential Oils

Step 1: Grate bar of soap.
I used our food processor, but a cheese grater works just as good!

Step 2: Put grated soap in a pan of 2 quarts of water and gradually heat until soap flakes are dissolved

Step 3: Put 4.5 gallons of hot water in a 5 gallon bucket and stir in 1 cup of borax and 1 cup of washing soda. Stir until completely dissolved

Step 4: Pour soap mixture in 5 gallon bucket and stir well. Cover and leave over night.

Step 5: In the morning stir well and add about 20 drops of essential oils (I like lavender for it's antibacterial properties). And pour into five 1 gallon containers (I use milk cartons)

***Use 1/2-1 cup of detergent for a full load! And voila, you'll have detergent for the next few months at least!

And the result  is... one happy, healthy family! No toxins or chemicals, and really affordable!

Get a load of that smile... don't you want to go natural too?
